In these few pages, I hope to elaborate on my philosophy of “what’s good” regarding art and media by drawing on examples of my favorites from each type. The value of media is subjective, and there is no right answer. Critiquing a work has its benefits, such as being able to identify what is successful and not in a project. This allows the reviewer to understand the characteristics of a work that are worth incorporating into their own stuff, and anything that should be fixed. Additionally, by publishing reviews, readers are able to see what is worth consuming, and what should be avoided. This, of course, depends on how well the reader aligns with the reviewer.

So, how does one determine the value of something? This sort of question gets complicated when you delve into more nuanced media than what is experienced in popular culture. In pop culture, we expect to experience the emotions we come for, whether that be joy from comedy or excitement from action. Sometimes, art is beyond that, and intends to invoke unexpected emotions, such as discomfort. Essentially, I approach art and media with two criteria. First, I ask, “is the intended message of value?”. Then I check, “how successful is it in conveying its message?”. Finally, I ask, “do I like it?”. While this last criteria may be oversimplified, I believe that it’s a disservice to disregard how it makes you feel.

In the following pages, I’ll draw my favorite examples of art and media and try to understand what makes them so great.
